The relevance is simply that I had a link that pointed to a resource on Yahoo! - that link was broken but Yahoo! effectively told my link-checker that everything was okay. Thus, I couldn’t resolve the broken link because I didn’t know that it was broken.
This was the main point of my rant. Webmasters should definitely confirm that they are serving the correct status code with their custom 404’s. |
Only too late do I discover the little snacksized tips in this article. As I also (eventually) mention on my website, I wanted to make sure my old Movable Type based URLs had the proper 301 Permanent Redirection code. This, with the help of HTTP Viewer worked out just great! While your Shapeshifter CMS can hardly fall into the category “hand-rolled CMS” anymore, I must admit it is the coolest (Blog) CMS I have seen next to Wordpress. |
Note: I’ve edited Joen’s comment slightly by shortening a URL (that had tripped my comment handler up) using the Metamark service. Joen, glad to hear that you found a useful reference here. The HTTP Viewer is absolutely invaluable to me, I’m sure you will find it just as helpful.
Awesome! Thanks, that’s a real compliment. :-) |
Maybe you sould contact Yahoo with a link to your entry… Then maybe “somebody” will configure that properly. |
That’s interesting, although I couldn’t quite work out the relevance of Yahoo! to your borked links?
I wonder if this has been considered by all the site-admins diligently creating custom 404 pages?
