Wow. This is amazing! I am completely stunned mate. I’m glad to see the long-overdue preview facility and using Markdown for comments was a brilliant idea (I’ve never seen it used for comments before either). However, providing the means to add images to comments opens the doors to abuse don’t you think? I’m sure you can appreciate the problem! I commend you for using Smartypants but with this font the results are almost undistinguishable from your non-smartypants text (a quick look at the page source confirms that Smartypants is working). Anyway, well done. You’ve really pushed the boat out here. |
I do and I don’t Aaron. It is a fact of life that some people will abuse this system. But I don’t expect the problem to become overwhelming - let’s face it, even in it’s previous incarnation, it has always been possible to add a hyperlink to a questionable resource. Being able to add an image directly just shortcuts a click. I anticipate a little “blip” as visitors “experiment” with the system, but I expect it will eventually sort itself out. If it doesn’t - well then I have two options:
I’ll just have to see how it goes.
I know. Is that a problem? You know how frequently I change things around here. ;-) |
No, I’m not. I have just realised that Jason Clark uses Markdown for the comments system on his website. Especially embarrassing is the fact that his website is in my own blogroll! Perhaps I was unconsciously inspired? |
I used Textile in my comments for a long time, but eventually removed it at the request of my readers. They were having problems with it mangling things it wasn’t supposed to handle, due to them not knowing what the syntax was. |
I’m looking out for problems Michael. Obviously, if anything gets in they way or causes problems for my visitors, then I’ll remove it. We’ll just have to see how it goes. |
Oooo a new toy! I gotta play…
That’s me. I’m just experimenting. I can’t get images to work. How do I upload them? Love the preview. It’s great to finally have that option.
Well I’m glad to help and I think I have found a bug. When I cut and paste from another comment the quotes thing with that Smartypants comes out all weird. I had to manually edit the quotes back to regular ones. You might want to check that out. This looks great though. I will definitely use the links and blockquotes. Cool! :) |
Hey Marie, glad you like the “new toy”! :-)
You don’t, at least you don’t upload them onto my server. That’s not how the imaging works. The image you reference must already be on the Internet (on your own server, or elsewhere), then you simply use the URI of the image in the Markdown.
Good catch. I’ve tried it here and I can see what you mean. I’ll have to look into that. Thanks for pointing it out. |
Oh, I get it. That’s so cool. {giggle} |
Oh no, what have I done? (anticipating future comments from Marie, which will all, no doubt, have girly images like flowers and animals on them) |
NOTICE: Mike P. has pointed out that users who are not logged-in and/or unregistered users cannot add comments. I am looking into this and should have the problem fixed shortly. |
UPDATE: Narrowed the problem down a bit - non-logged-in users can’t preview, or post if they’ve tried to preview. But they can post if they don’t preview! Let’s see… |
Nice work John. It all seems to be working now. Adding the preview mode is the biggest improvement and probably the one that’ll be most beneficial to us. Markdown is pretty cool too, but I doubt that the average guy will use it. |
Ha, ha. No way man. I’m not that kind of “girly”. Images that I use are more likely to be of big Harleys. |
LMAO. That’s good to know Marie (thank God)! |
Finally fixed this bug! |
Ahem, I didn’t fix the bug. Let’s try again:
Does this work? Seems to be okay - more testing is definitely required though… |
Testing the handler… handler (this is an edit)… NOTE: This comment has been edited by its author! Additions are shown in italics, deletions with a strike-through. |
Testing the handler (as a non-registered user)… This line is new (testing edits)… NOTE: This comment has been edited by its author! Additions are shown in italics, deletions with a strike-through. |
Bold text
An apple a day keeps the doctor away.
Ordered lists too…
Blockquotes:
This is not bad at all.
Note to Self: Couldn’t get Markdown to display its list syntax in a code block. Need to investigate this.
