Crappy news, man. It’s never fun to lose 6 hours to anything, and sadly we’ve almost all been there with windows, haven’t we?

Can you be sure that it was just the hard disk that was damaged during the storm? Maybe a lot of the problems you encountered were due to other bits of hardware in the machine being affected?

I am 99% sure danbee. I removed everything from the system bar the motherboard and PSU. The BIOS didn’t complain about anything, so I assume the motherboard was okay.

The PSU seems undamaged - it’s powering everything.

I have since tried the NIC, video and sound cards in another PC and they all check out.

But the most compelling argument is that the PC is running fine now under Linux!
