Optimizing RSS Delivery
Tags: Announcements, CMS, Distributed Computing, Urban Mainframe, Website Development
Regular readers will already be aware that I have something of a "bee in my bonnet" about the bandwidth demands of RSS polling.
I have made two experimental changes to the RSS feeds available from this website which will, hopefully, reduce the bandwidth consumption a little.
1) All feeds are now compressed before delivery with mod_gzip, when the client software supports the HTTP/1.1 protocol.
2) All feeds are serviced via the Coral peer-to-peer content distribution network.
I will be closely monitoring RSS traffic over the coming weeks to assess the impact of these changes.
