I remember reading Stoll’s book when I was a kid. It was what got me hooked on the Internet rather than just straight programming. Then I spent years hunting for it to read it again. Only finding it once in a library So I’m glad to hear it is still available. I’ll be ordering it shortly! If you’re interested in that sort of thing, have you read Takedown? Not as good as Stoll, but still very interesting PS As of today, I have your RSS feeds back. I’m not sure why it took until today… |
I haven’t read Takedown Lachlan, at least not in printed form, but I have read most of Shimomura’s account online. {embarrassing admission} I used to suffer something like hero-worship of Kevin Mitnick, so I have read his story from all angles. {/embarrassing admission} I would definitely like to get hold of Takedown at some point.
Today, I stopping passing (some of) my feeds through the Coral network. I switched off gzip-encoding on the feeds a few days ago Lachlan, so I have to deduce that it was my Coral implementation that caused you problems. Today I began the process of routing my feeds through FeedBurner - so now I have RSS 1.0, RSS 2.0 and Atom compatibility. I also have styled feeds (when they are viewed in a web-browser) and I have feed statistics (applause)! Note: This is not, in any way, a criticism of Coral. The service is still new, there are still some bugs for Michael and his team to iron out. Coral is still eminently usable and extremely worthwhile for reducing the load on a web-server. |
Ah, FeedBurner, now that is a funky system! I notice that your HitMaps is up and running now too - although it shows my IP as originating in somewhere like Canberra, as opposed to Victoria (still I suppose these things can’t be too accurate - how scary would that be?) Kevin Mitnick is a very impressive fellow. I’ve got his security book somewhere too. I can’t remember what it is called but it is definitely on the desk |
FeedBurner is so funky - I’m already loving it - great to finally see some stats on my feeds. Glad you noticed the HitMap, I’ve only just set this up (tried to get it running while they were obviously experiencing some downtime - not clever of me). It looks pretty cool and my vanity needs a little stroke every now and then. :-) It will be interesting to see how it scales. If you mean “The Art of Deception” (Mitnick’s security book) then I have it too - it’s a good book and one that every SysAdmin should read at least once. |
Inner peace — Here I Come!
Oh but seriously, this is an interesting article series. It’ll be fun to see it evolve.
I’d like to comment on the Butterfly Effect. I enjoyed it, although I must admit I don’t really think it’s such a good movie. It’s a good idea, it’s just not well enough executed, me thinks.
As for the ending, I read it is quite different in the “Directors Cut”, than it is in the theatrical version… Read on imdb for some snippets.
